St. Augustine Church in the Bronx, before and after

St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church was built in 1894 on a hill at the corner of 167th Street between Fulton and Franklin Avenues. in Morrisania, The Bronx.

Designed by architect Louis Giele in a very severe Renaissance and Baroque atyle, it’s imposing facade almost cast a shadow on the behemoth Second Battery Armory, which was built across the street in 1911.

Changing demographics and the relative blight the neighborhood underwent in the 1970s cause the diocese to take a look at the church. The parish was combined with Our Lady of Victory in 2011, and a couple of years later the wrecking ball came for St. Augustine, tearing down the 14,000 square-foot church and rectory.

In its place went up St. Augustine Apartments, which were slated to open in August, 2017. As of this writing in early August, 2018, the affordable housing project had not been completed.
