Built in 1884 as the Havemeyers & Elder Filter, Pan & Finishing House, the Havemeyer family was said to control ninety-eight per cent of sugar production in the United States at the start of the 20th century. The yellow refinery building was later built. On September 25, 2007, the Filter, Pan & Finishing House were protected as a landmark, but the rest of the structures weren’t.
In 2014, demolition started for the refinery and cylinders.
